How Has Indian Education System Changed In The Last Decade?
  • Posted On Tuesday, September 13, 2022

The education system in India has seen rapid changes in the past decade. With the emergence of blended learning, online classes, and experiential learning, the education system has changed regarding students' interaction with the educational content.

The dramatic shift in the system has already become the new normal within the institutions. Experiential and project-based learning has become the need of the hour (Read on How to support Indian education to fulfill the dreams of youth). The New Education Policy 2020 has made specific policy inputs to make online education a part of all education efforts in the country. Let's dig in deep to know more about the Indian education system changes in the ten years.

Transformations in Indian Education System

1. Smart Screens have replaced black and white boards - Just within a decade, this is one of the biggest dramatic shifts. Why? Because of the emergence of technology-driven Smart Classrooms. All the lectures, formulae, and concepts are holistically described and available to download anytime. As a result, the intelligent class has contributed significantly to attracting students, followed by decreased dropout rates. Since the advent of smart studies around 2013, this has become a norm in India's primary schools.

2. Online Lessons – Online coaches started with the adoption of technology by the private sector. Many ed-tech companies have adopted these technologies and shown how online education can be an effective tool to personalize education and, at the same time, resolve the issue of delivering quality education to the masses.

The importance of Online education took a dramatic turn during the COVID-19 lockdown, and now it has become the main plank of education in the ongoing COVID crisis.

3. Free access to content: One significant change in the last decade is the free availability of content. Various Youtube channels have come up with free content for all the courses.

The Ministry of Education, NCERT, CBSE, and other government bodies have made free educational content for all. In addition, initiatives like E-Pathsala, Online NCERT books, Educational TV channels, and NPTEL began providing expert content free of cost.

4. Short-Term Skill-Based Online Courses: This is again a significant change where top educational institutes are going online to provide skill-based online courses at a fraction of the earlier cost. Also, the market is recognizing these skills and helping students take these skill-based courses and become a part of the job market.

5. Experiential and Project-Based Learning: The experiential and project-based approach has slowly and steadily become an important part of the curriculum. The internship has been made mandatory at the university level in almost all vocational and professional courses.

6. Use of Machine Learning and Artificial Learning: These technologies have rapidly been adopted in test preparation segments. Embracing AI and ML have led to personalizing test preparation with specific inputs to improve the learning outcome.

The changes that have come up in the last decade in the education system were unprecedented in the previous 60 Years of the Independence of India. The New Education policy will provide more thrust and policy support to these emerging changes in Indian Education System, and it will definitely lead to achieving the long-term goal of availability of quality education to all and 100 % literacy in India.
